The Galaxy Z Fold8 differs significantly from its predecessor, the Z Fold7, when it comes to hands-on use, as Samsung has altered the physical layout instead of just continually narrowing the Z Fold7. Fold8 is 123.9x81.9x9.7mm when closed, and it weighs 201g as compared to 215g for Fold7. Most importantly, it is shorter and wider, making the cover screen 5.5 inches and 16:10 ratio, providing more space for typing and normal phone uses. The unfolded 7.6-inch panel is in 4:3 shape ratio. For reading documents, multi-tasking, video, and other formats it is particularly good as it tends to make the screen look less tall and narrow, as is the case with older versions of Folds. The trade-off is that users who preferred the Fold7’s taller inner canvas may find the new proportions less familiar.
The display is one of the Fold8’s strongest measurable upgrades. The QXGA+ Dynamic AMOLED 2X inner panel has a refresh rate of 1 to 120Hz, a peak brightness of 3,000 nits, and a low-reflection finish. The crease will still be noticeable, but not as pronounced as initially, meanwhile the hinge being flatter is making the opened device seem more like a miniature sized tablet. Two-column layouts are more natural using the wide canvas and the legibility is outstanding outdoors. However, Samsung removed Flex Mode from this model, because the redesigned hinge is optimized for a flatter fully opened position. That is a meaningful functional loss for users who relied on partially folded tabletop workflows.
Performance is appropriately flagship-class. With Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 and 12GB/16GB RAM depending on storage options, Galaxy is capable of busting through demanding multitasking, gaming tasks, and on-device AI tasks without any complaints. Samsung has 256GB, 512GB and 1TB models, and for those aiming to record more and more video, or for those with extensive offline library collection, the 1TB is the logical model to choose. Despite the lower cost of the Fold8, the price decrease isn't at the expense of core computational power, which will be shared with the Fold8 Ultra.
Camera testing reveals the clearest compromise. Fold8 uses a 50MP wide camera with optical stabilization and a 50MP ultrawide, plus 10MP cover and inner cameras. Daylight images are detailed and Samsung’s processing produces strong contrast and color, while Nightography and the ProVisual Engine improve difficult scenes. My FanCam adds subject tracking for video, and 8K recording reaches 30 frames per second. Yet the Fold8 has no dedicated telephoto camera. Compared with the Fold7’s 3x optical telephoto and 200MP main sensor, distant subjects and aggressive cropping are less versatile. Buyers prioritizing zoom photography should therefore consider the Fold8 Ultra instead.

The battery capacity is increased to 4,800mAh, from the Fold7's 4,400mAh, powered by the silicon-carbon cells, and there's 45W wired charging and wireless charging. Reality endurance is solid, not league-leading by any stretch of the imagination, especially when smoothness, brightness, games and cell phone service come into the equation. The Fold8 is thus best seen as a conscious compromise: it's lighter and more ergonomic than the previous model, significantly more functional for reading and multitasking, yet still pricey and far less capable in zoom photography, stylus input and Flex Mode than some higher-dollar choices.
